What the back says... What if the Lift driver who finds your cheating boyfriend's phone holds the directions to true love?
'Who are you and why do you have my boyfriend's phone?'
'He left it in my car. You must be the blonde in the red dress? I'm the Lift driver who dropped you two off earlier.'
And with these words, the life of the brunette and t-shirt wearing Maya Maas is turned upside down. Having planned to surprise her boyfriend, she finds herself single and stranded in an unknown city on her birthday.
So when the mystery driver rescues Maya with the suggestion that she cheers herself up at a nearby beach town, she jumps at the chance to get things back on track. She wasn't expecting a personalised itinerary or the easy companionship that comes from opening up to a stranger via text, let alone the possibility it might grow into something more...
Now, I think it's fair to say, I'm a romance reader. I love a good book with a great love story. I want hearts, flowers, romance... the works. And with this little nugget of joy I was not disappointed.
The story follows Maya, a twenty-something stuck in a rut, living a life she knows just isn't working for he. When a planned trip to surprise her boyfriend does not end the way it was supposed to, she ends up spending a magical 24hours with a man she's just met - accidently - communicating only by text.
Spending a birthday she will never forget with someone she has never met - or seen in the flesh for that matter - leads to a whole life change. Giving up a safe, but unhappy relationship and un-fulfilling job in New York City, she sets off for Carmel by the Sea, intent on finally meeting her 'Max' and living happily ever after. That is, until she is derailed by the intriguing writer Ethan, not only has he re-produced Max and Maya's night as a best-selling novel, but he is also reluctant to get these two love birds together in the flesh. What exactly is he hiding and why is he so defensive?
This book has everything a romance reader like me needs, a strong but stubborn heroine, a dashing but complicated leading man and a host of interesting and relatable supporting characters that flow with you through the story. The story will have you feeling all the feels - the first flush of love, frustration at how some people can be so stubborn - if you're not mentally screaming 'just tell him how you feel' by the end you're a much more relaxed person than me - and the anticipation that finally there will be the happy ending we have all rooted for.
Happy to say this has been one of the best books I have read this year and I'm so pleased to be able to share my thoughts with you all. If you're a lover of a good love story with a modern twist then this is the book for you. This will take you away to the seaside and have you wishing for a beach house in Carmel before you've even reached the final chapter.
